WHAT IS CALISTHENICS?

Calisthenics is unique to Australia and can be categorised as both a sport and an art. As a sport, it encourages physical development through its combination of gymnastics, simplified ballet, marching, singing, apparatus manipulation, folk & modern dance. As an art it develops an appreciation for music and rhythm, the beauty of correct technique, and the excitement of performing on stage.

Calisthenics involves a team of participants learning routines choreographed to music and presenting these routines on stage at competitions and concerts. Pupils learn between four and six routines concurrently throughout the year. This is where the diversity of the sport is shown.

Calisthenics teams are broken up by age groups. Participants of all ages are encouraged to join as there are teams available for Tinies all the way through to Masters and everything in between.

There are many benefits to be gained from calisthenics including:
  • coordination, strength, and poise
  • team work and sportsmanship
  • self-esteem and confidence
  • fun and friendship
